After many, many months of teaser videos and years of drunken recording sessions, my once-upon-a-rhyme PDP partner Reason and my soon-to-be ex-neighbor-in-law (I just bought a box of hyphens, wholesale) Dirty Hank have unleashed The Monty Brogan EP for FREE.

If you're unfamiliar with their dynamic, to frame it in a Poorly Drawn filter: its like the always-stellar Reason routine along with a smaller, squeakier version of me, if I was into serial rape and alcohol poisoning (as a verb). Oh Hank, you scamp.

Call it anti-recession rap: a couple of artists content with their discontent exploring the depths of their Johnny Walker Red-scented underemployment. It's The Monty Brogan EP, and it's the latest project from Providence-based indie rap stalwarts Reason and Dirty Hank. It also marks the first official collaboration between Reason (best known for his work with Poorly Drawn People and his solo albums, Landlords & Lullabies and Gemini Slang) and Dirty Hank (the man responsible for a run of stellar releases, including The Class Act Mixtape and The Guide To Giving Up EP).

The 9-track release, a free download available through Poorly Drawn Recordings, finds the dubious duo at their raunchiest, musing about breakups, alcohol dependency, and squatters' rights. Production duties are handled by Falside (fresh off his collaboration with Juan Deuce, The Mechanics EP) and Mad Plaid, one of Rhode Island's premier, up-and-coming beatmakers. Songs include lead single "Say Disease," as well as "Not That Hip" and "Perfect Day To Die."

The Monty Brogan EP is available through Bandcamp at the link above . For now, it's a free download. But the safe bet is to grab it quickly, because Congress can only pass so many unemployment-benefit extensions and Brooklyn Lager isn't getting any cheaper.

GRAVEYARD SHIFT – Metermaids by Strange Famous Records

The lack of chest thumping bravado on this record is a breath of fresh air in a music scene that’s been drowning in fantasy rap for over a decade. However, don’t confuse the Metermaids’ too-honest-to-fake-it approach with one of ambivalence. At its core, the “Rooftop Shake” LP is an upbeat homage to a more grimy NYC aesthetic sans the overt braggadocio. The main theme of the album deals with two Brooklyn transplants coming to terms with life in the Big Rotten Apple, which is one of beauty as well as grit.

9th Wonder (Jay Z, Little Brother, Murs) provides the soulful sonic backdrop for half of the album and even pokes his head into the vocal booth to make some incredibly rare appearances on the mic. DJ Rob Swift essentially acts an honorary member of Metermaids, accentuating each track by doing what he does best; handling the cuts and adding the stylistic cherry on top. The songs that aren’t produced by 9th are handled by M. Stine, the main contributor to the Metermaids’ previous EP efforts which garnered them over 100,000 downloads as well as the attention of Sage Francis, ultimately leading to their signing on Strange Famous Records. CAS UNO: Sticks Out Like A Sore Thumb.

There's little doubt that if you've been to a PDP show over the past 5 years, you've experienced Cas Uno of Labeless Illtelligence. Whether its been when he's (sometimes quite literally) tearing apart the stage, downing brews by the billion at the bar, or holding court outside schooling the uninitiated on the finer points of his vast network of CASpiracy theories, he's been a consistent, strong, and welcome presence in our Poorly Drawn lives.

And he's got a new record for you.

His latest CD is Sticks Out Like A Sore Thumb, and he has announced that it will be his last proper solo album. He was good enough to invite a good chunk of PDP to the farewell party, as Storm Davis and Reason make appearances on the mic and Dox handles production on numerous tracks. We urge you to pick up this album without hesitation. It's dope, and definitely the most consistent and accessible Cas Uno project to date.

Lil bro and PDP producer emeritus Falside has dropped knowledge regarding his latest comings and goings:

Whats the word internerds? The month of October has been nothing but productive. I am currently neck deep in unreleased material bound to make you heads nod. I’ll start off with announcing the title to my album, (yes my album). Dusty Knuckle Fan Club (D.K.F.C.). This will be my first official release/full length producer compilation featuring a culmination of artists from coast to coast. As of now, I do not have a release date, but rest assured it is on it’s way to completion (so keep it on your radar). For now, I can let you know that Jeru the Damaja, Stalley, Planet Asia, and Copywrite have all contributed DOPE to the project….but that is give or take 35% of the suprises in store.

Along with the release of Dusty Knuckle Fan Club I am working on a free mixtape with Undergroundhiphop.com that will be a freebie bonus disc included with Dusty Knuckle Fan Club. In the upcoming month, I will be leaking two or three songs from the mixtape on the interwebs (most notably, a fire record with Pack Fm and Radix, another with Canada’s grindhorse Noah23, and other gems with Lo-Life Meyhem Lauren and Queens wordsmith, Action Bronson).

On the home front, Reason (Poorly Drawn People) and myself will be announcing the release of our Free EP (Death Before Decaf). This is a collection of dope records we have completed over the summer/early fall months. More information on that project very soon. Rite Hook and myself also have some new kush brewing ready to fuck you in your ear drums. I am contributing to many upcoming Poorly Drawn Peoplereleases (Million Dollar Dumpster Mixtape) and a collaboration with fellow PDP REC family, Educated Consumers.

You will not be able to avoid that promo onslaught once it begins.

PDP: Stuff & Thangs.

Long time no update. Or, a month, anyway. Here's some of what's been keeping your favorite Poorly Drawn Peoples and their associates busy:

Last Saturday night, under the stars and adjacent to a beer tent filled with the first officially drinkable Narragansett beer (called "Fest," appropriately), Storm Davis, Reason, and Dox took the stage at the Rocktucket Block Party in Pawtucket, RI and made a whole bunch of new friends as we filled a half-hour with hip hop in an evening otherwise replete with noise-rock and its offshoot genres. The festival itself got a thumbs up from the crew, with the roped-off block filled with trendy cuisine-du-jour food trucks and universally happy drunks. And crackheads dancing with canes and finger-dancers on LSD. Our type of party. Many thanks to the Rocktucket organizers for having us.

The previous Wednesday, Cas Uno and Esh the Monolith of Labeless Illtelligence had Storm & Dox up to the House of Blues Boston to perform for the post-Fenway crowd. Labeless' Intrikit and his crew D.I.M. also contributed to the spectacle, and SD fell in love with a painting of an alligator by an artist named Jane McCord that hung over a booth in the pub area. It was appropriately titled "Alligator," and he regrets not snapping a picture of it. So many lost opportunities in this here rap game.

Continuing our series of press-you-missed, here's an article from the June 2, 2010 issue of the Providence Phoenix spotlighting the recent works of PDP's Reason and Falside:

"Poorly Drawn People has some new members, and a new way of doing biz."
Earlier this year, acclaimed hip-hop collective Poorly Drawn People announced (via PoorlyDrawnPeople.com) the birth of Poorly Drawn Recordings, a home base for PDP pioneers Storm Davis, Dox, and Reason, as well as producer extraordinaire Falside, a key free agent pickup for the PDP ensemble. The February blog post gave some insight on the newfound, streamlined approach under the PDP REC umbrella: "We've managed to go our entire existence without signing to or establishing an actual record label . . . We've done pretty well as a 'collective,' a team with a revolving roster that carried the same flag onto the field every game.
"Same house, just got some new furniture."
PDP REC is accruing talent outside state lines, having signed Maryland-based duo Educated Consumers as well as providing support for longtime cohort Entity, who relocated to the D.C. area. Indeed, business has been steady at PDP HQ in '10, with Falside cranking out must-have mixtapes on a quarterly basis and the recent release of the critically-acclaimed Landlords & Lullabies by veteran PDP wordsmith Reason.
Esteemed producer Falside just turned 21 but has already garnered the respect of some serious indie-rap luminaries, particularly with his latest mixtape, Dollars Make Change. C-Rayz Walz drops two quality tracks, "Catching the Strange" and "Hall of Game," while Pacewon and El Da Sensei tear up "Too Many MCs." Termanology and Vast Aire also appear, and the standout closing track "Too Much" features Boston-based rhymer Slaine of La Coka Nostra fame. The Dollars mixtape is available for free download at Falside.com; while you're there, be sure to look up his previous releases, namely the Meet n Veggies EP with Boston turntablist DJ Emoh Betta (of the Deck Demons) and the '09 "seasonal beat tapes" Cold Feat and Bugs In Ya' Teef. "I've just recorded a record with Jeru the Damaja," reads a Falside tweet from last weekend. Not too shabby, considering Falside was barely five years old when Jeru the Damaja dropped The Sun Rises In the East (Jesus, we're getting old).
Andrew Martin, local journalist and co-founder of the rap authority PotHolesInMyBlog.com, acknowledged Fal's enviable skills behind the boards: "Falside's production is just too damn good to not want him to take over, or at least be a major part of the game."
Falside produced seven of the 14 tracks on Reason's Landlords & Lullabies, with quality production help from ESH the Monolith of Labeless Illtelligence and PDP's Dox. Landlords is the official follow-up to his 2006 solo debut Gemini Slang (the recent Stalker Stories mixtape is also up for grabs free of charge); he was also an integral voice on Poorly Drawn People's Nothing Stays Gold, Shoot for the Stars, Hit the Ceiling, and Motion Not Emotion.

Landlords & Lullabies boasts more of Reason's slick quips and punchlines, necessitating the aural double-take when zipping through bars on "Girls with Cameras" and the new single "I Don't Want to Build," but Reason sounds more coolly confident on Landlords, and the opening four cuts are some of Reason's finest yet. Falside's funky percussion escorts Reason on the opener "Apocalyptic Sunrise," ESH loops drunken saloon piano on "Release," Storm Davis and Reason address trust fund "starving artists" on "Designer Kids," and "Paid Bills" (which debuted on The Ocean State Sampler, a free download available at PotHolesInMyBlog.com) proves why Falside and Reason make a nice tandem. No filler (or nonsense skits) here, as the latter-half cuts hold their own, from the funky Dox-produced jam "The Touch" to the new single "I Don't Want to Build," addressing wannabe "genre-hopping" Internet emcees. And a nominee for double entendre of the year goes to ESH on "Distracted": "Deep in a hole like Courtney Love on Ketamine."

Jay Berndt: On The Outside, Looking In

Jay Berndt is an ex-metal singer turned country-Americana-style crooner that resides in Providence, RI. I've known him for 20 years, and watched as he went from playing Faith No More covers to playing huge festival stages to forming one outstanding band to another, dipping into offshoots of many genres along the way. He even made a pit stop in hip hop, in a way.

Jay's voice is the one you hear sparring with mine on "Ten After Three" on the Kegstand Poetry album. We've also got a new track in the works called "A******* I*****" for the urban-legendary pseudo-project Robot Rock & Necktie Blues, an illusion of sound that you've heard too much about already. I was blessed to open up on the last reunion show ever (to date) of Kilgore (Smudge), the band that put Jay on the musical map for many.

Jay is prepping his first solo album for release on North Carolina-based indie label Rusty Knuckles Records. Below he details how one goes from a heavy-metal screamer to a country vocalist in one not-so-easy decade. His reasoning is pretty similar to why I chose to become a rapper rather than fronting a rock band: its all about what you can say where. It's a good read. Read it.

Well folks, its time to introduce you to a good friend of mine by the name of Jay Berndt. Needless to Jay has been there and done that with his musical career playing with folks as far and wide as Ozzy, Slayer, Clutch, Fear Factory and many more. But that just wasn't him and now in act 2 of his career, Jay has been doing the Country and Americana side of things for quite some time now. We are stoked to be releasing his new album this fall, so stay tuned of updates from Jay Berndt and that deep baritone of his, which is going to be broadcasting world wide in just a short time. Also, we will be hearing more from Jay in his blog posts on the Rusty Knuckles Blog about what he has going on with his tunes.

This is the question I have been asked numerous times over the years, and it’s not exactly an easy thing to answer in a just a few sentences…..

So five hundred years ago, in the early 90’s, I sang for a metal band called Kilgore. That in itself is ironic because I never really liked heavy metal music when I was growing up (although I did come to love it later on). I was a born and bred Rhode Island kid living in Southern California in the early 1980’s and man, I did not fit in. I was a plaid flannel shirt and corduroy jeans kind of kid and everyone else was surf shorts and t-shirts. I had a funny accent (Yooz guyz), I was taller than everyone else in my class, and I was absolutely horrible at sports. I was pretty much ridiculed everyday because I just didn’t fit in. At twelve, I had no friends, I was completely alone, angry, and depressed.

Now I had grown up on my father’s record collection; Chuck Berry, Ray Charles, The Beach Boys, Little Richard, the Beatles, Carl Perkins, The Who, Cream, The Rolling Stones… But I was beginning to rebel and wanted something to piss off my parents. I loved AC/DC but that didn’t cut it because my old man liked them too. So, what social group of misfits is perfect for angry rebellious youths? Metal!! Plus this was 1984, the height of British heavy metal, but honestly…. I just didn’t like it. Although I thought the music was really cool, I would listen to those Bruce Dickenson or Ronnie James Dio lyrics, and I’d just laugh. All those songs about dragons and witchcraft just sounded so goofy to me. I just couldn’t get into it.

So I was even outcast from the outcasts. I ended up joining the school marching band, learned how to play drums and eventually I did find some friends. One of them introduced me to The Ramones, The Sex Pistols and The Clash. It was exactly what I was looking for. Angry lyrics channeled over simple rock-n-roll. I fell in love with punk, became kind of obsessed with it and that opened the door to hardcore. Black Flag, Minor Threat, The Misfits and Bad Brains were my soundtrack to junior high and high school and each of those bands became huge musical influences on me.

Years later, I moved back to Rhode Island and met the guys who would make up Kilgore while I was attending high school. When we first started, we played thrash, which to me didn’t sound all that different than hardcore except with shitty vocals. So I thought it would be cool to mix my own version of Henry Rollins meets Glen Danzig to their version of thrash, and Kilgore was born. After we graduated, we played tons of shows, put out demos, got ourselves a following, and somehow got ourselves a record contract with Warner Bros.

In 1995, we were on the road, playing a tour that would drop us off in California, where we’d be recording our first record called “Blue Collar Solitude”. One day in the van, our sound man Mike Aruda and I were talking about music. He asked me what were the most punk rock lyrics I ever heard. I think I may have quoted The Clash or something off of “Damaged” by Black Flag. He said bullshit, and asked if I wanted to hear the most punk rock lyric of all time. He plopped some headphones on me and hit play on the Walkman. I heard “Well I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die…” and it was like I was hit with a bolt of lightning. It was absolutely the most punk rock thing I ever heard and it was recorded by a sharecropper’s son from Dyess, Arkansas in 1955.

I played that tape over and over again. I remember when we got to Los Angeles; I went to a record store and bought “I Walk the Line” on vinyl, which was a Columbia album Cash recorded in 1964 that contained a bunch of remakes of the early Sun recordings. I got that and the “Live at Folsom Prison” album and I think I actually wore the records out. It was just so simple. Great voice, simple arrangements, great storytelling… It all just spoke to me. It sounded like all the 50’s rock-n-roll from my dad’s record collection. I then picked up Hank Williams, Waylon, Willie, and Merle Haggard. It was like discovering a musical world I knew nothing about. I had always stayed away from country because all I knew was “Rhinestone Cowboy” and Hee Haw. But this was the real deal.

Many years later, after Kilgore was no more, I hadn’t really progressed with my country music listening, other than the few artists I just mentioned. I had read “Cash” by Johnny Cash after it was named dropped in the High Fidelity movie and I found it to be really spiritually moving. I had picked up all those amazing American/Rick Rubin albums, and loved them all. Then all of a sudden… Cash was gone.

It really affected me. I felt like I lost an old friend or like I had when I lost my grandfather. I was really depressed. To get me out of my slump, my wife, a few of our friends and I decided to check out a Johnny Cash tribute show at a local Providence bar. We had been talking about it for days and we were getting excited. When the band got onstage, they were really cooking. The rhythm section was tight and the telecaster player had the boom-chicka. I was pretty impressed. Then the singer stepped to the mic…… and out came this thin, nasal voice. Then I got angry. We all got angry. We got angrier with every song, so went to another bar to bitch about the band. My wife said “You know you should start a country band.” I told her she was nuts. I knew nothing about writing a country song. But I kept thinking about it. I picked up all the guys Cash had named; The Louvin Brother, Roy Acuff, Ernest Tubb, George Jones, Sons of Pioneers….. I got obsessed again. I picked up more and more.

I had started playing music again around that time (2003), just a rock-n-roll band with some friends from work. I was having the hardest time trying to write lyrics. All I had ever known with Kilgore was writing about my anger and having it veiled in classic literature references. But the more I thought about it, with country music, I sure could tell some crazy stories about certain events in my past. I picked up my guitar, and it all came pouring out. A lot of those crazy road stories made it into those early songs. It felt natural, like it was something that I was supposed to do.

Over the last few years, I put together a couple of really great country bands, The Revival Preachers and The Brimstone Assembly, and we made a few recordings. I’m really proud of the music I made with them. All those guys (and gal) are great musicians as well as really great people. We really had a lot of fun. People from my past were pretty shocked to hear that I was playing country music. I’d always get “Uh, how the hell did that happen?” Like I said, it’s not exactly an easy story. Then again, nothing in my life is an easy story. I’d like to say I never looked back, but I did.

We did a two show Kilgore reunion in 2007, and I joined a metal band called Bloodwitch in 2008. It was kind of like putting on an old pair of boots. Really comfortable, at first, but there’s a reason you bought new boots. I had a great time and the music was awesome, but it just didn’t feel like me anymore.

I’m somewhere different now. I had the worst time trying to write metal lyrics in my thirties. I’m not an angry twenty-something anymore. I don’t have that chip on my shoulder and something to prove. Overall, I’m a pretty happy guy now. I have a great job, an amazing wife, three awesome dogs, and a good home in a quiet neighborhood with a two car garage….Hard to bitch about taxes and your mortgage over a metal song. But it sure can make a goddamn great country song.

To make this even more SD-related than simply his PDP membership, I will slyly mention that a new batch of 8 beats were delivered for me by Falside this past week, some destined for our joint project called B******** R*****' & C****** T******, which will reach your ears, well, probably never. 7 tracks are in the can already. So, given the inevitable absence of any actual product, just think of the possibilities. With song titles like "W*** R** F** M***** P*******", its better in your imagination anyway.

Brzowski: Snappy Dresser.

Friend-of-SD Brzowski is an emcee representing Portland, ME, with a sound that defies accurate description. It really is one of those styles that requires actual live listening to understand or appreciate.

I've long maintained that he's playing for the wrong crowds, and that if he would just divorce himself from his love of hip hop culture (or whatever it is that makes him continue to rock for rap crowds that seem to have to strain to understand his sound), he could make some serious noise (both literal and figurative) in any number of perpendicular genres. But 'nuff respect for continuing to beat the path of the hip hop road warrior, and since I'm listening already and he seems happy, well, it would seem things are all good.

Check the video above to hear some of Brzowski's live throwdowns, and nod approvingly as you see him rock one of the second generation Storm Davis 'Kegstand Poet' t-shirts. That's love and support right there. You can feel free to do the same at the PDP Online Store.

As we continue to bubble under the surface, slowly constructing the next monsterpieces to be unleashed from the catacombs deep 'neath the basement of the PDP Mansion, we figured we'd take this downtime to post up some old press that we missed over the past few months.

Here's an interview with Reason done by the fine folks at AboveGround Magazine:

Reason is a member of the Rhode Island-based independent hip-hop collective, Poorly Drawn People. He recently dropped his sophomore album Landlords & Lullabies, which is the follow-up to his acclaimed debut album, Gemini Slang. With his time between albums, Reason traveled the East coast and beyond with the PDP crew in support of their collaborative projects, Motion Not Emotion and Shoot For The Stars, Hit The Ceiling. Reason has worked with underground artists such as Drumat!c, Lazerbeak (of Doomtree), Phillip Drummond and fellow PDP-members Falside, Storm Davis and Dox.

1. Tell us something no one knows about you.

I’m a hypocrite but only on the weekends. I also document any spelling, grammatical, punctuation or print errors I come across in anything I read. I’ve got 3 notebooks dedicated to it.

2. What do you want people to take away from your music?

People should give back to my music but if they have to take something away hopefully it’s a little less self hatred. Also, an understanding that yes, your friends and their friends, are better rappers than Reason.

3. What is one of your biggest regrets?

Deciding to take rap music seriously.

4. What’s one of your greatest hip-hop memories?

Seeing RUN DMC live! No, that never happened. I’ve never seen them live. My greatest hip-hop memory or memories are probably when it wasn’t cool to be a part of hip-hop. Those were fun times.

5. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Hopefully not here but who knows. I’ll probably still be making music and still paying rent. If that doesn’t pan out perhaps I’ll open a bar with someone else’s money… Dream big kiddies.

Sterbyrock: Who's Laughing Now?

Once upon a time, DJ Sterbyrock could be seen doing damage at the rear of the stage at every live PDP performance. Our original steel-wheel-minder, Dusty Frazier, had moved on to bigger and warmer states, and Sterby slid right into the lineup and held it down, show after show, for years.

As we all know, times change, people change, hairstyles change. Sterby found a more lucrative outlet for his DJing prowess where he could better express his styles (and subsidize his fearsome sneaker collection), and Dox decided that rapping was for the birds (quite literally, in a slang-related sort of way) and announced he'd prefer to move behind the tables. Everyone was happy.

So now, on the occasions when Dox decides to relive his former frontman glory, Sterby returns to fill his former steady gig. But in the meantime, he can be found spinning his signature mash-ups to Eddie Money fans and M.O.P. enthusiasts alike at a club near you, while still holding down Warped Wax Wednesdays with SwerveOne on 90.3 FM WRIU, and cranking out outrageously limited-edition mixtapes at an enviable pace.

Reason: URB Magazine gives L&L 4 out of 5 Stars!

Recently, we blubbered on about our love for URB Magazine and how it felt very warm and fuzzy (and hardcore)(guns weed forties) to have them recognize PDP for our deep underground antics. Well, they've come through again: URB has given Reason's Landlords & Lullabies a rating of 4 out of 5 Stars! Peep the text below for their take on the record:

For many, hip-hop may not be the first thing that comes to mind when the small state of Rhode Island is brought up – but that’s okay. Rhode Island has a true underground scene, and it’s one of hip-hop’s best-kept secrets. Emerging from this underground is rapper Reason, who is also a member of the collective Poorly Drawn People. Reason’s latest full-length, Landlords and Lullabies, is an ambitious, blue-collar album that gives a fresh spin to many of hip-hop’s most trite topics. “Designer Kids” takes aim at pretentious artists, using hilarious anecdotes for verses that lead into a cautionary hook. On “Release” Reason delivers some of his more personal bars, instructing critics to love him or hate him, but to understand that he simply won’t change just to please them. And that’s a good thing, because Reason is making moves in the right direction.

The production on Landlords and Lullabies is a welcomed return to hip-hop’s more traditional aesthetics. Sampling vocal chops and catchy piano and horn loops, the production gives the album a slight jazz vibe, but it remains grounded in hip-hop with boom-bap drum sequences. Falside produced half of the album, including the standout track “Paid Bills.” The production lineup is rounded out by Esh the Monolith, Justin Catoni, DRUMAT!C, Dox, and PhillipDrummond. Despite a large production roster, Landlords and Lullabies is a remarkably cohesive project.

Reason succeeds because he allows his intelligence to subtly overcome the listener. His rhymes aren’t overpowering and verbose like Percee P’s, yet there is a definite creativity to his storytelling that makes his lyrics every bit as worthwhile. He pays close attention to finer details such as syllable structure and internal rhyme to ensure that his words flow fluidly over the beats. It is this attention to details that makes Landlords and Lullabies a rewarding listen from start to finish.

In the background, sidekick Dirty Hank scatters his manic vocal accents over Falside's bouncing hypnotics, which serve as a perfect complement to the message of the track.

URB Magazine Loves Us Back.

For years, your pals here at the PDP Mansion have scoured each and every issue of URB Magazine, searching for like-minded audiophile miscreants and photos of slender neon-cloaked ladies rocking huge headphones among the pages of the latest and greatest 'bout to bubble over beatmakers and vocalists.

Dr Hook may have echoed the sentiments of our parents' generation's garage bands when he sang about the cover of a Rolling Stone, but URB was where we wanted to be. The Source died with the '90s, XXL never quite got it, and while Waxpoetics is the Bible, you never really strive to arrive on the cover of the Bible... you just kind of hope to pop up in a passage in Revelations at some point. More on that later though. And even later, more on how that doesn't make a lick of sense.

Well, we didn't make the cover. But we can't sweat that, since most months there isn't actually a cover anymore. But we did make our way into URB, and found out that they like us. They really like us:

There are some hip hop groups that I don’t understand how they ever “make it”. Yet there are others I never understood how they don’t “make it”. The Providence, Rhode Island hip hop collective, Poorly Drawn People, fall into that later statement. Made up of several talented emcee’s, producers and DJs, they have been bubbling beneath the surface for a couple years now, waiting for their chance to make their mark on the music scene. It’s starting to look like 2010 might give them their best shot yet.

The usual local luminaries will be in attendance, weeping and grinding and sloshing their way about the premises. As usual, it will fill up quick, so make your way over early so Ref doesn't have to bar you from the overcrowded festivities.

Continuing a series of PDP updates to get you up to speed on what the crew has been working on real quiet-like, we give you the latest from Washington DC producer Entity:

PAST DUE

In 2006, Entity released Past Due, a compilation of tracks produced by the man himself, and featuring appearances by all of the usual PDP suspects, as well as Providence-area luminaries such as Need Not Worry (Formulatin' Fathers), DJ Mekalek, Crisis, Romen Rok, and Ricky Dutra, as well as elsewhere presences like Time Machine, Emilio Lopez, and theGenetics.

The original press was limited to 100 CDs and a digital release, during a time when people were still purchasing CDs and hadn't quite gotten completely onboard with the digital revolution. So, needless to say, while it was a great compilation of upbeat, headnod-worthy tracks, Past Due withered on the vine.

PDP was proud to announce that on June 1, 2010, Past Due will be re-released as a remastered CD with updated artwork, as well as a digital download.

Proud, that is, until, in a move that has confounded the marketing department here at Poorly Drawn Recordings, Entity made the album available for a "pick-what-you-pay" download on his Bandcamp site here and asked that we announce it. He just loves you people that much. So, while we're still proud of the album, the upcoming re-release is a bit anticlimactic at this point. Go get it for free now. CDs if you want them in June.

SECOND WIND

Also on June 1, Entity will unleash Second Wind, his long-awaited follow-up to Past Due, that includes songs recorded before, during, and after the Past Due sessions.

The official tracklisting is still being compiled, but listen to Past Due and you'll get the general idea. If you dig that album, you will get a serious case of sonic deja vu when Second Wind hits your speakers. And that worked out pretty well for Denzel Washington.

FINAL NOTICE

June is a long ways off though, and Entity ain't gonna make you wait that long with just one free project in your iPod.

Earlier this week, while hungover from his attendance at a Jay-Z concert the night before, Entity sent an email update to Poorly Drawn Recordings, summarizing his new endeavors, in the signature manner we've come to love here at the Mansion:

Funny with the twitter update jokes...first and foremost. Appearently I speak another fuckin language. I'm releasing Final Notice my PRE-Album mixtape next Tuesday. I'm sure I can bump it up HOWEVER THAT is all I asked for as! I put Past Due on my bandcamp page, set a release date for second wind, AND have this tape coming out! Sounds like an announcement to me! If your busy FINE but dont bust my fuckin balls and downplay my releases. Now maybe none of you give a fuckin shit but I do. Its a release of mine and I would appreciate hte same announcement consideration as every other fuckin person with PDP REC. That being said my new website and other social means will be updated later...but for FUCK SAKE I would appreciate the fact that June 1st my album date is announced and my mixtape thats coming out or was supposed to come out next week was announced. Not to mention when I told you storm that I was releasing the mixtape next tuesday you failed to mention ANYTHING about reason releasing a tape that same day. I would appreciate a little INTERNAL communication and less fuckin jokes and take my stuff as seriously as any of your stuff.

Most of those who find themselves swept up in PoorlyDrawnMania (much like BeatleMania, without the bowl cuts, Neru jackets, and Shea Stadium) (and fans) were already somewhat familiar with our latest acquisition, number two starter Falside. Not as many are privy to the accomplishments of our two new corner outfielders, Seez Mics & T.E.C.K, also known as Educated Consumers.

Educated Consumers is a HipHop duo composed of producer T.E.C.k! and MC SeezMics. The Educated Consumers critically acclaimed sound is born from their blend of HipHop’s Golden Eras: the early 90’s style of production and new millennium form of Mceeing. As you can see, the duo's latest release came in 2009 with Hello Big Mama, an album that featured EC's first collaboration with PDP, the song "My Us." EC invited Reason and Storm Davis to add verses to the track, and the rest, as they say, won't get fooled again.

Hello Big Mama was released digitally by VerIzUm Records, but PDP is proud to announce that in 2010, the first official physical release of the album will come courtesy of Poorly Drawn Recordings, in the form of a remastered state-of-the-art (circa 1984) compact disc with full touchable artwork.

When, you ask? When can you get your grubby lil paws on this gem?

Well, we don't know when, exactly. But we can tell you this: the re-release of Hello Big Mama will coincide with the release of the first full-length PDP/EC collaboration, Poorly Drawn Consumers (snappy, eh?), making for the first dual-release date in the history of PDP.

We'll leave the details of that for another day, but that's what's happening. Over a half dozen tracks have already begun to take shape, and we plan to have both projects in your hands sooner than later.

Speaking of DC, right around the capitol-ish is where the veteran emcee/producer duo of Seez Mics & T.E.C.K. hail from (or maybe its Maryland, frankly, I'm more of a big-picture guy and these type of details just escape me), but Seez has spent enough couch-surfing time in the Poorly Drawn camp over the past couple of years to have earned official status. Plus, there'll be some official music collaborations from PDP & EC, and some Educated Consumers releases, that will hit you this year under the Poorly Drawn Recordings banner. THE WHAT? ANNOUNCEMENT #2

Signees? A new way of doing biz? The Poorly Drawn Recordings banner? Whuuuuuut?

We've managed to go our entire existence without signing to, our establishing, an actual record label. Opportunities to do both have come up, but we figured that we've done pretty well as a collective, a team with a revolving roster that carried the same flag onto the field every game. But in the interest of forging ahead and reducing confusion for those who never got the whole 'collective' concept, we're simply shifting some responsibilities around and streamlining the way we do things. Same house, just got some new furniture.

Henceforth, solo projects from Reason, Storm Davis, Dox, Falside, and Entity will carry the Poorly Drawn Recordings logo. Projects from Educated Consumers that are under the PDP umbrella will do the same, and they will continue to seek and create opportunities outside of Poorly Drawn Recordings that best expand the EC brand. Projects from DJ Sterbyrock will continue to remain property of Sterbyrock, as he prefers to act as our live DJ and not engage in the day-to-day activities of what is now called Poorly Drawn Recordings.

When you see a "Poorly Drawn People" CD, or the name on a flyer, same as it ever was: Reason and Storm Davis on vocals and Dox mult-tasking in his usual fashion. But maybe you'll see and hear the rest of the crew too. It'll be a nice surprise for ya.

So really, in the end, we're still a collective. Just with an easier operating manual for the suits and the tax people to browse in the lobby of the PDP Mansion. For you, it just means more music and more Poorly Drawn projects for your well-worn Walkman.

It's time we caught you up on the mentions of our last album, Motion Not Emotion, in print, since we were outrageously lax on letting you know who said what since its release.

We've managed to post up nearly all of the major ink that we've been given by the Providence Phoenix this year, and we can't give enough love to the local alternative weekly and especially to Homegrown Product writer Chris Conti, whose consistent support has been overwhelming. Having the biggest media outlet in the local arts community in your corner has been invaluable, and we do appreciate it.

The always supportive Wake Your Daughter Up has hit us with so many accolades since the time the record dropped its hard to know where to begin. But praise from such a reputable outlet has helped keep us striving to impress them with the next one, so big ups to Trav and the whole WYDU staff.

On April 9, they gave us this endorsement upon the release of MNE:

"Those not familiar with PDP, the group is made up of five members, Storm Davis, Reason, Dox, Entity and Sterbyrock. I've been blasting their music since running across Storm Davis' solo album, Kegstand Poetry for The Recovering Alcoholic, back in '07. We started talking and he let me know of the rest of his crew. From there, their mixtape, Nothing Stays Gold, dropped in 2007 and last years Shoot For The Stars, Hit The Ceiling got major play on the iPod/car stereo, discman, computer and home stereo.

Well, they are graduating from the mixtape scene to.......well, I'm not sure what exactly this is, but it's got the flavor and cohesiveness of a full fledged album in the form of Motion Not Emotion. On June 17, head writer Trav listed MNE in his top spins of the week, and wrote:

"In a way, I'm somewhat pissed that this album hasn't taken off as much as it should. This is one of the most cohesive and enjoyable hip hop albums I've heard in a long time. The beats are all on point and the lyrics are filled with battle raps, sense of humor and straight up rewinders (what we used to do to hear a dope line on a tape back in the day). Tracks like "Stress Filled Days", "Might Blow Up", "Ain't Hard To Make A Million Dollars", "Stealers Wheel" and "Sawbucks & Fins" is straight up hip hop with a nice musical ambience to the tracks. I don't know what to say other than go listen to this album and tell me you ain't at least feeling some of this EP."

On July 13, they ranked the top ten EPs of the year so far... and guess who landed the coveted #1 spot, beating out heavyweights such as Rhymesayers' Brother Ali and his Truth Is Here release?

"When PDP dropped Motion Not Emotion, I gave it a listen, and actually was planning on being harder on it than the average submission, just because I didn't want people to accuse me of favoritism (not that I give a rats ass what people think). After the first listen though, I knew that this was a good, nah it was a GREAT, release.

I hated to include this as an EP, although that's what the four man group of Storm Davis, Reason, Dox, and DJ Sterbyrock label it. The truth is, this is one of my favorite projects of any sorts this year."

Here's one we reaaallllly should have made more of a big deal of: CDBaby, one of the largest independent music sellers in the world, gave us a front page feature this past June, as well as a FIVE STAR REVIEW. Yes, out of 5. Here's what they had to say:

"It's tough to pin this Rhode Island hip hop crew down, and that's exactly what makes this disc such an interesting listen. Each track (though handled by the same producer, the crafty Dox) sparks a new vibe, shoots off in a new direction, but never strays too far from the cut that preceded it. Fittingly, there's a stream of randomness in both the music and the lyrics, but an underlying focus shoots through and makes it all gel. "Celebrity Rehab" is both fun and bitter, with quick-fire verbals calling out the pseudo-famous with a sly nonchalance, while "Better off Dead" takes a darkly funny look at post-breakup emotions. The beats knock across the board, with slick percussion providing tight backgrounds for Reason and Storm Davis, the two gruff MCs who know how to play off one another. Those three would be the P.O.S. record, the Tanya Morgan record, and this gem by Poorly Drawn People who are... white guys from Rhode Island. Whaaaaaaa? You heard me. Remember long ago when we announced that producer Falside had remixed an unreleased Reason of PDP track for his upcoming remix project? Oh yeah, that was yesterday. Well, he leaked it. Here's the press release:

You've probably been wondering just where in heckfire PDP has been. Well, PDP has been busy. Busy as bees. Bees who drink their tiny faces off and are pathologically depressed despite being able to fly, throw ass darts (pause), and make honey out of shit that would cripple other motherfuckers. Bees who spend an inordinate amount of time wondering how much money Rob Lowe has spent on abortions in his lifetime.

Because we assume it is a substantial amount of money. Dude was unfathomably handsome and outrageously famous at like thirteen years old, right? So he must have been laying pipe long before Class or Youngblood or when he became the ultimate 80s badass in St. Elmo's Fire. Shit, there's even tapes of him tagging fifteen-year-olds or something. Not that we approve of that, per se, we're just citing the evidence. Even with that 'Buy 9 Get 1 Free' card that Planned Parenthood hands out, we're betting that there has been a serious investment made in the termination of pregnancies.

Why have we been thinking about this, you axe? Well, we think that if Rob, who has made much much more money than that over the course of his career(s), would just match that amount and hand it over to the staff of Poorly Drawn Parenthood, we could invest that sum and furnish you all with a hearty slate of new releases and paraphernalia.

Thus far, the messages we have left with his assistant have not been responded to.

So we move on. We hustlaz, after all. We hustlez.

Anyway, we've been doing other stuff too. We usually are loathe to announce anything until it is finished, pressed, packaged, and ready to be put into your hands, but its been 2 months since we drew back the curtain and let you peek in, so what the hell. Also, the fine folks at the Great International Beer Festival have invited us to be the evening entertainment at this November's festival. That's right, the Kegstand Poet, the guy who wrote "Happy Drunk", the deejay whose prowess with a freezer rivals his skills on the tables, and Dox, who spends more time in bars than reciting bars, will be unleashed upon a sea of unlimited beer. We are again inviting you to participate in our forthcoming 16th Great International Beer Festival held again at the Rhode Island Convention Center in downtown Providence.

Our recent Spring Beer Festival, with over 4,200 attendees, was an overall success. Several new breweries were on hand and our music entertainment was 1st rate.

The November 14th Festival welcomes back the Great International Beer Competition, our 13th, under the direction of Judge Gregg Glaser. Last November there were over 200 beer competition entries, with well publicized results. Gregg also conducted our “Tutored Tasting” at the Show. To prevent overcrowding and long wait lines we increased our square footage to 70,000 from 40,000 a few years earlier, thereby easier to handle the estimated 7,000 attendees.

Reason is yay close to finishing work on his new solo album, Landlords & Lullabies, featuring production from Falside, Esh the Monolith (Labeless Illtelligence), Drumat!c (Formulatin' Fathers), longtime PDP merch-table-mercenary Justin Catoni, and Phillip Drummond, plus raps by Storm Davis and Dirty Hank. L&L will most likely be PDP's next release, and should hit your 8-track players before the end of the calendar year.

Sometime after the release of Landlords & Lullabies and the completion of Dirty Hank's Guide to Giving Up, the intoxicated neighbors will join forces to give you The Monty Brogan EP, a bunch of raps to make your girlfriend very, very angry, presented over a full slate of Falside production.

Storm is not quite as close to finishing Robot Rock & Necktie Blues, his sophomore album featuring wall-to-wall production from Dox. The Chinese Democracy-reminiscent juggernaut has become the victim of an Axl-esque bout of vapor lock and as a result is frozen in developmental hell. Which one would think would be warm. But whatever. Work on the record began in February 2005 and now contains absolutely none of the songs written in the first 2 years of the process, but is evidentally so hot that it melts SD's thoughtsicles whenever he considers the possibility of its existence. Yet not hot enough to melt the frozen hell of developemental... you know what? This dude is obviously full of crap. We give up. Allegedly, the album will arrive in stores.

In the meantime, SD has launched work on a full-length project with producer Entity, who is best remembered for doing everything he possibly could to stop Kegstand Poetry from being completed. The album is nearly halfway finished, which means someone involved in the project is due for a meltdown at any moment, and it has already run through an impressive selection of working titles, including Infallible Chocolate Jesus; A Fine Looking Spaniard; Triangle of Sexual Junkfood; and No Rest For The Wicked Awesome. A hearty amount of guest appearances pepper the record, including verses from Reason, Cas Uno & Esh of Labeless Illtelligence, Chachi, Emilio Lopez (Demigodz), Vorheez of the Problemaddicts, Dirty Hank, theGenetics, and more. Yes, more. Its a party ova hurr.

IndieArts Festival 2009.

Last year, SD&PDP rocked the inaugural IndieArts Fest at 1pm on the hottest day of the year. PDP Chief-of-Security Petey Wheatstraw had to drag an over-exuberant (and most likely homeless) dancin' fan from the stage, the fellas had a grand ol' time self-censoring in real time once they surveyed the crowd and saw that it was a family-friendly event, and SD refused the sale of PDP t-shirts to a family who wanted them solely so they could soak them, wear them as turbans, and toss them away. That ain't how we roll, I don't care how hot it is. Keep your $10.

We did, however, give away 'nuff merch, including a t-shirt to a down-on-his-luck fan who claimed, "I'm homeless now, but when I had a home, you know, before I lost it, I used to listen to PDP in it all the time."

A week later we saw used-to-have-a-house guy get into a fight outside one of our favorite local watering holes while wearing his Kegstand Poet t-shirt. It was torn to shreds.

Oh well, we tried.

So come make some more nearly-interesting anecdotes with us this Saturday at 5pm. It's outdoors and free, so skip Rock The Bells in Mansfield and go see the House Of Pain reunion at the tour stop in NY on Sunday. Cuz if you high tail it out of Providence, this is what you'll be missing:

Poorly Drawn People is a social club for gentlemen of leisure. Members include Storm Davis, Reason, Dox, Entity, and DJ Sterbyrock.

PDP are renowned for their capacity to enjoy outings, robust libations, the companionship of sharp-witted and randy ladyfriends, and a well-prepared eggplant dish.

There's plenty of tribute out there for you to peruse, so I'll keep this as short as possible.

My first record was Michael Jackson's Thriller, a reward that was the result of a deal I'd struck with my devout-Catholic parents in grade ahemkoffkoff back in 1983. A quarter of straight A's for one slab of black-person disco. Because of their close-to-fanatical interpretation of the Church's teachings and, therefore, the absolute ban placed on any and all forms of rock n' roll (as all popular music was deemed), I get a late pass on this generation-defining album.

Up until then, I had gotten my Michael fix from sneaks of MTV whenever we could afford to have cable turned on, mostly in the form of the "Beat It" video, which is probably why the track remains one of my top 3 from his catalog to this day. I shoplifted a copy of "The Michael Jackson Story" by Nelson George from a Scholastic book fair at school, and read it cover to cover, over and over. I even dug it out of the archives to do a book report for an English class in 1986, years after the shine of Michael's ubiquity had faded.

Bad helped get me through a particularly bad semester when I was exiled to a local all-boys school, and by Dangerous, Michael had just become a standard, an old favorite that was a pop staple in a music collection that had grown to become almost exclusively stocked with hip hop and heavy metal. I did geek out a bit whenever he rocked with Slash from Guns N' Roses, and bumped the Fugees remix of "2Bad" (off of HIStory) with the John Forte rap verse. I discovered Off The Wall properly for the first time as I began DJing, but MJ had become someone to take for granted, no longer a must-check as the music world became bigger and bigger through college and the beginning of my own small career in da biz. I copped Invincible out of loyalty, for the same reason I still buy records by any number of acts from youth: They were there for me when I needed them, and if my ten bucks can do the same for them in a time when most of them have been abandoned by all my friends who "grew up," then I'm glad to do it.

I've already gone on too long.

I tuned out during most of the scandal, but sadly, it seems the great majority of it was for good reason. Specifics of guilt aside, he was a troubled man who came from troubled beginnings and lived a life whose pressures would have felled many of us much quicker. Some have no place for empathy or sympathy for such a figure; I'm not one of those people. He gave me too much, so even if I can't necessarily give him the benefit of the doubt, I can give him what he gave me: support. Michael Jackson was my gateway to music, and music became what has propped me up in some of the most difficult times of my life. Without question, I owe him one.

I only hope that wherever he is, he can find the one thing he could never seem to while he was here: peace. May he finally rest in it.

We hit the road with Maryland's SeezMics of Educated Consumers and Dezmatic from Albany, enjoyed marquee status at the Lucky Dog in Worcester courtesy of our old friends RADIx, rocked for over 1000 of our closest friends in Providence with Mickey Avalon & Schwayze, making a new close friend in the process in Beardo (he's so easy to fall in love with it's just plain silly), got some nice press for Motion Not Emotion. At Tazza Caffe, Dox hosted the release party for the first ever disc out of Falside's Digsafe Records, the Dirty Hank Class Act mixtape; we threw a birthday bash for Gemini slangsters Reason & Storm Davis at the PDP Mansion North that was so successful that everyone has had to patch together a collective mosaic of memory to describe what actually happened that evening.

PDP once again has been nominated as Best Hip Hop Act in Providence by the Providence Pheonix in their yearly Best Music Poll (vote here), along with our brethren Labeless Illtelligence, Jon Hope, Chachi, and Romen Rok, while PDP DJ Sterbyrock looks to bring home the Best DJ prize. Oh yeah, and Reason has been working like a madman on his new album, Deconstructing Passive, while Storm & Dox meander towards the general vicinity of the finish line on the better-be-a-masterpiece Robot Rock & Necktie Blues, known in certain parts of the blogosphere as PDP's own lil Chinese Democracy.

But we'll try to catch you up with some details on all of this soon, and not be such strangers. But really, it doesn't get much stranger, does it? So no promises.

This could be a defining year for the revered Providence-based hip-hop collective Poorly Drawn People. Or not. Check out this post from lyrical frontman Storm Davis at poorlydrawnpeople.blogspot.com: "It's either going to be a beautiful year or a beautiful disaster. If nothing else it will certainly be a year to watch. We will either blow the roof off of 2009 or it will cave in upon us, and you can come visit the rubble and reminisce in the years to come." Poorly Drawn People were forced to cancel a New Year's Eve gig at Local 121 thanks to inclement weather, but bounced back a few weeks ago at a packed Jerky's, opening for veteran wordsmith Apathy. PDP closed out '08 with their second mixtape, Shoot For the Stars, Hit the Ceiling, the official follow-up to '07's Nothing Stays Gold. PDP resident emcees Dox, Reason, and Storm Davis bob and weave seamlessly atop beats provided by longtime 'RIU turntablist DJ Sterbyrock and in-house producer Entity. The result is 80 minutes of hip-hop sure to satisfy indie-hipster backpackers, aging suburbanite rap fans, and street-corner solicitors alike. Storm in particular sounds more feisty and hungrier than ever since his acclaimed 2006 solo debut Kegstand Poetry for the Recovering Alcoholic, with a vocal inflection somewhere between Everlast and Group Home's Lil Dap.

PDP will return to Local 121 on Valentine's Day in what Davis dubbed "The Billy Ray Valentine's Day Celebration," with family tree cohorts Labeless Illtelligence supporting. It's fun to shoot the shit with a fellow ol-skool fiend like Davis, and one track in particular on Shoot For the Stars, "No Interruptions," bombarded me with goose bumps. Those in-the-know may recognize the sample from "Somethin' New" by an obscure Golden Era emcee named Grand Daddy IU, a Hempstead, NY rapper with a molasses flow who released his debut album Smooth Assassin on Cold Chillin' Records, then home to Juice Crew heavyweights Kool G Rap G Rap, Master Ace, and Big Daddy Kane. I caught up with Storm and asked him what differentiates a Poorly Drawn People performance from the typical rap show.

"Energy — above all else," Davis said. "Our mission is to have a good time on stage, and we invite the people to join in. Plus, if you pack the place with enough ex-girlfriends, it creates a palpable tension that could develop into chaos at any moment.

"The Living Room was definitely our favorite spot in Providence, and right now we're still trying to find our footing in a world without it," Davis said. "We've done really well in Brooklyn and Baltimore, and the crowds are definitely more responsive on the road at this point. Providence is rightfully sick of us to a degree, and it seems they'd like us to go make a name for ourselves nationally or be done with our little charade."

I asked if the passion for hip-hop music remained a few decades after guys like Grand Daddy IU helped pave the way for underground rap music. "That passion for the music other people create has faded from that 'fanboy fever' that you feel when you first discover it, but not the passion for actually making the music," Davis said. "I feel like there comes a time when it's no longer your job to be inspired by albums, but to try and make the albums that inspire other people."

Storm confirmed a March release for the new Poorly Drawn People EP Motion Not Emotion, followed by a solo platter (produced by Dox) titled Robot Rock & Necktie Blues, and Reason's new solo album, Deconstructing Passive, should arrive this summer.

A team of tastemakers and professional appreciators of the highest caliber, they're led by the homie Trav, who got the back of your favorite Kegstand Poet early on in the first wave of positive-PDP-press. He continues to put his rep on the line by standing up and proclaiming that all within earshot should be checking for SD & PDP, and SD & PDP sure as hellfire appreciate it.

WYDU's favorite MC that is named after a 80's Major League pitcher is back at it again. Along with his boys, Reason, Dox, and Sterbyrock, he brought along friends in the form of Ams Uno and Prolyphic. I guess that even though I had a lot of mellow jams early on in the countdown, it's the adrenaline pumping jams that got the high marks, and "Fat Back Burners" is no exception. A fuzzy, thick bassline give the track a backbone, then they utilize one of my favorite instruments (only if done right), the electric guitar and a crazy horn loop over the the chorus and you have some shit that makes you want to jump up on the bar in a drunken haze and imagine you are Run of Run DMC, kickin' lyrics to the masses.

The Poorly Drawn People mixtape Shoot For The Stars, Hit The Ceiling also came in at #31 on Trav's Personal Top 40 Albums of 2008.

Big ups to Trav & the WYDU crew for keeping our name in virtual ink, and congratulations go to the friends of Poorly Drawn that also gained recognition from the venerable blogspot: Prolyphic & Reanimator, Educated Consumers, and Shawn Jackson.

New Year's Even.

So the cascade of crystal condensation that made New Year's Eve afternoon a white-out zone led to the premature cancellation of the PDP New Year's Eve Extravaganza. Way to start out 2009 for your favorite indie rap swashbucklahz.

The crew scattered and did the did, with SD & Dox hopping from Lily's to lilypad, only to find there was no frog-kissing that could turn the frozen tundra of Providence into a palace full of princesses. Sterbyrock headed to Fall River to DJ what apparently was the greatest warehouse party in the history of the planet. Reason did what Reason does, and we're certainly not going to tell you what that is. Entity had Chinese food with Jarobi.

We hope your NYE was far superior to ours. And that you and yours have a safe, happy, and spectacular 2009.

Which brings us to 2009 in PDP-Land.

Dec 121: Maverick Awesome's Bday.

The usual dose of once-a-month PDP awesome with a twist. A Maverick Awesome twist.

Those with a pair of eyes and a keen understanding of radio voices know that M. Awesome is the other product of the Awesome-Davis union that took place back in the 60s/70s/80s or thereabouts: he is the biological brother of PDP's Storm Davis.

Blessed with names fit only for the spotlight, this dynamic brother duo was forced to shoehorn their collective ego into the entertainment industry and spout ironic sarcasm at high volume over the next few decades till someone agreed to love them. Many, many people who post their thoughts on the Internet continue to be upset by this to this very day. Even more people who aren't sure what the Internet is are doubly upset.

But don't worry: they won't be at Local 121 on Saturday night. You will. And you are who matters.

So come listen to the ol'skoooool sounds of Dox of PDP & DJ SaveOne, and buy Senor Awesome a birfday beverage. It's really that simple.

Storm Davis recorded featured vocal parts for Guns N' Roses' track "Catcher N' The Rye" way back in 1999. The song has been confirmed to appear on the ridiculously long-awaited album Chinese Democracy, but a leaked sleeve note suggests that the PDP rapper's contribution has been removed.

Possibly the world's biggest Storm Davis fan, Thomas Eisele, wrote on stormdavis.com to break the unfortunate news:

"Hi Storm,
First I want you to know that I'm a huge fan of your work. I grew up with all of your music and still love listening to it. Now, ChiDem is about to hit the market and the booklet is leaked. Do you know that you're not on "CITR" anymore? What do you think about it? Makes me a little sad as I was looking forward to hear your part more clearly. I'm one of the webmasters of the German PDP-Board and just wanted to know your opinion. I'll keep it for me and I won't tell anyone. But I don't know if you read this email... ;)

Here's Storm's response:

"Ah ... well, I did not know this. Thanks, Thomas.
Well, it is a shame, perhaps ... I did put quite a lot of work in, and was proud of it. But I could understand if Axl wants to have an album which reflects the work of the members of the band as it is, right now.
I do have mixes of the tracks with my vocals on, work tapes at the time, but they will remain private, out of respect for Axl.

I caught these d.j.'s spinning at my new favorite local haunt, the aforementioned Local 121 and I was in high school again. Mad props to the Poorly Drawn People crew...and I don't just throw out props indiscriminately. Props is precious, son.

So, these guys were playing some of my favorites and because god is awesome they were also handing out free c.d.'s---my copy quickly found it's way into the black hole underneath my car seat, only to be found one glorious day as I was looking for my bic. And, EUREKA! Three weeks later it's still in heavy rotation.

Finally, a Rhode Island act that doesn't suck...and hasn't yet relocated to Brooklyn.

The plan was to wait to assault your grill with this entry until an official album release party was in the works, but SD has grown impatient with too little of his world being blessed by the sounds that slam through his speaker cones on an every-other-day basis. So get ready for a blessing, readers.

Those of you who have experienced the SD & PDP mixtape releases Nothing Stays Gold and Shoot For The Stars, Hit The Ceiling, or have been to any one of about 80% of our shows in the past 2.5 years, have had the opportunity to witness Labeless Illtelligence, our beat-battering brethren who split time between PDP's hometown of Providence and Labeless leader Cas Uno's homebase of New Bedford.

Well, here's the thing: Labeless Illtelligence includes a gent named Esh The Monolith (see "Out Of Order Border Patrol", "Cops & Crooks", and the new "Swinger Status"). Esh The Monolith has released his debut album. And it is excellent.

SD is partial to Esh because he attended his first game at Yankee Stadium with the man, and it was the last time he saw Jason Kendall in an A's uniform. And because they've sat on the seashore and eaten seafood together. Seahorse seahell. Pause.

SD is partial to "The World's Smallest Violin", the closing song on Esh's album, because it reminds him of the end of an Eighties movie. SD is partially retarded.

None of these things change the fact that The ADDventures of an E.ccentric S.uper H.ero is a great album, and you should make it the next CD you purchase.

If you've been to a Storm Davis and/or PDP show in the past 2 years, you've no doubt noted the mysterious man downing Heinekens between scratch sessions onstage behind the crew. That there is STERBYROCK, officially a member of the Poorly Drawn for a shade over a year now, but most certainly down since day one.

Today he celebrates a big anniversary, and SD would be remiss to miss a chance to publicly note the event, and say thanks to the man that makes sure there's music to distract you from his constant droning.

LAST MINUTE ADDITION! (to our hectic touring schedule, that is).

It seemed that The Clipse (or their Re-Up Gang, at least) had something better to do next week (I'm guessing coke) and cancelled the Providence date on their tour with Wu Tang's premiere slang editorialist Cappadonna. So, as Poorly Drawn People is quite obviously the next rung down on the coke-rap ladder, the promoters threw up the PDP signal and we put down our razor blades and rolled-up Benjamins and responded in the affirmative.

After all, Cappadonna did do that ill verse on "Winter Warz." And then... well, he did drive that cab in Baltimore for awhile, and Maryland has always been good to us. And, Wu Tang is Wu Tang is Wu Tang. Sort of.

Plus, we just came off a great show with Keith Murray (rocking to 250 rabid Worcester supporters - don't let them show you up, Providence; come support!) and Hit Squad alumnus K-Solo just joined Sterbyrock & Reason on last week's installment of the Warped Wax Wednesday radio show. It's 1998 Week at the PDP Mansion - come help us close it out in style with our first performance as a crew at Lupo's Washington Street location.

Last weekend, dem Poorly Drawn boyz were privileged to play at Providence's first annual IndieArts Festival (details can be found in the entry below). The promotional ramp-up for the event included an issue of The Agenda (an arts & culture newspaper that bills itself as "Providence's Only Free Sporadical") dedicated to all things IndieArts, including profiles and interviews with the performers.

Because volume and force of the wind that he expels could carry Columbus to the New World, PDP's Storm Davis took up the task of answering The Agenda's questions. Also because the crew was on one of their weekend-pseudo-tours at the time of the interview (in Washington DC with producer/bane-of-our-existence Entity), and everyone else was far too inebriated for such tasks.

Barrels of ink costing what they do these days, The Agenda only printed excerpts of the conversation. For posterity's sake, we present to you: the unedited PDP transcripts.

1.) Is there a lack of diversity in music venues in Providence? NAH.

2.) What are some of your favorite bar/music venues that have gone, and why do you miss it/them? Club Babyhead, The Met Cafe. CUZ WE KEEPS IT REAL.

3.) Do you think gentrification is a real problem in Providence? We don't so much think as we do feel, to conserve our logic reserves for the aftermath of The Rapture.

4.) What are the essentials to making a city culturally viable? Larger culture receptacles. Less places without these receptacles.

5.) Do you think that Providence is the "arts city" that it promotes? We think the "arts city" that Providence promotes is Snug Harbor.

6.) If you could ask the Mayor a question, what would it be? How often does he wear that Storm Davis t-shirt his aide bought at SoundSession last year?

7.) If you could add one new state department to city government what would it be and what would it do? The Department of Getting Our DJ, Sterbyrock, a Sexy New Girlfriend & Parks.

8.) How do you think the music scene today compares to six years ago? More technology, less techno.

9.) Should new condos be developed on the waterfront in India Point Park and where the Old Shooters is, or should the waterfront be a public space? 9.a) Does the city need new condos? The hippie in me says 'a public space,' but right now I'm more concerned with reporting to the authorities that I just got roofied and rogered by a hippie than I am about condo development.

10.) Graffiti:"art" or "malicious destruction of property"? Malicious Property Art.

11.) Has Downtown changed for the better? Since when? The 80s? Hell yes. Since yesterday? Status quo.

A few weeks back, we opened a show for Eyedea & Abilities (of the Rhymesayers Entertainment camp). For a number of reasons (including the weekend of the show also being the weekend of my 2_th birthday, constant extreme shifts in my job/emotional/social landscape over this most recent chunk of time, copious amounts of Jack Daniel's finding its way into my system, that there are only 24 hours in a day, I'm an ass, etc) I never recapped the show (which I do occasionally) or even gave it the ol' long-winded, almost unreadable SD intro on the ramp-up to the date (which is generally a lock).

Luckily, the homie SeezMics from Educated Consumers did it for us.

Educated Consumers (from Maryland) also opened for E&A that evening, and impressed the shit out of us. Not only did they have that rare quality of not being garbage (which is something underground rap acts excel at more often than not) but they were chill as fuck and provided excellent merch table conversation. Their Write Hear album is dope and you should buy it.

Took us 90 minutes to get to I-95 from Brooklyn. Word.

This was the first city where we had a hotel and I was anxious to see what kind of accomodations we'd be dealing with. Fortunately for us, <3 Kel was on the case and booked us a dope room on the cheap. We chilled for a bit, soundchecked and set up merch at the venue, then broke out to get some food.

Providence is a lot like D.C. in that you go from rundown industrial graveyard to bustling urban sprawl in a matter of 500 yards. A Mexican spot did us lovely and I was amped for the show. Unfortunately, the Celtics were eliminating the Pistons (sayonara Flip, keep playing the other team's best scorer straight up!) and the crowd was more into the game than my bad jokes. Such is life. I got to build with Storm Davis of the Oakland A's/Poorly Drawn People, and hopefully we'll be trading shows with them soon.

Manhattan had drained the party out of us, so we weren't in the mood to go out. We were in the mood to take some pictures with the venue's graffiti wall as the backdrop and do an interview in front of a Dunkin' Donuts (the interview footage will be posted shortly ahem Sean ahem.)

Thanks to all of you who joined the Poorly Drawn family at Local 121 on Saturday for Dox & DJ Save1's monthly old school extravaganza. Naughty By Nature marathons, obscene dance moves, and cake for Reason's birfday, plus the usual gang of glassware housing the devil's potions, once again added up to a rousing success. It's a lock for a good time, so mark the date for next month (July 12). Don't worry, though: we'll remind you. But you probably guessed that already.

You Could Drink With Storm Davis!

Greetings friends, friends of friends, & former 3-time NASCAR finalist Big Doug,

As you might imagine, I receive dozens of hundreds of emails each decade axing how one might be able to mill about inside of a room containing my awesome as it smoovely sips away at the world's remaining supply of Jack Daniel's.

Just this once, Ima tell yoo.

This Saturday, in Providence, Rhode Island, Storm Davis (who is now typing in the third person) will be doing just that at a bar called "Low Cal 121" on Washington Street in Providence. He supports this bar because its name clearly fits in with his relentless quest for physical fitness. Also the staff is mad scrutinizable. Especially the dudes. Seriously, he's having them audited (No Boston Tea Party).

As Labeless Illtelligence emcee Cas Uno points out on his drop for this mixtape, the most recent of many from Poorly Drawn People, "y'all are some seriously depressing motherfuckers." Going on my one and only impression of the group, Storm Davis's Kegstand Poetry for the Recovering Alcoholic, and the title of this mixtape, I would likely agree, but what they offer up with Shoot for the Stars, Hit the Ceiling shows a completely different side of this five man crew.

The production from Dox and Entity is mostly upbeat boom bap that results in great beats like the countrified "Hooked on Symphonics," the fun posse cut "Fatbackburners" and the bass-drenched "Poison Propaganda." PDP emcees Reason and Storm Davis (and sometimes Dox) put these instrumentals to good use in a variety of permutations, including group tracks, duos, solos and a bunch of different posse cuts.

There are many impressive verses throughout. Sure, it's a lot of braggadocio along with a pair of sex raps (one from each emcee), but there's also a small selection of message-based tracks covering dirty cops ("Cops & Crooks"), revolution ("Let the People Know") and counteracting mindless rap ("The Vaccine"). The crew's fifth member, Sterbyrock, stops by to drop a shout-out along with some turntable manipulations. This is the Poorly Drawn People that I'd like to hear more from.

Best HIP-HOP ACT in PROVIDENCE: Poorly Drawn People

Poorly Drawn People — Dox, Storm Davis, Entity, Reason, and DJ Sterby Rock — are crafting an aesthetic, and monstrous reputation, for the best damn hip-hop around. Davis, the de facto spokesman, attributes their success to a variety of factors, but one element in particular: "Ninety-eight percent of it has to do with the fact that we actually, sincerely don't give a shit what anybody thinks," says Davis. "Don't get us wrong — we love validation, praise, applause, and whatever else people want to give us. But if we're happy with it, we don't care what anyone thinks."

PDP met through mutual friends in the area hip-hop network. "The more time we spent together, the more respect we developed for each other," says Davis. "Every time we played, I would get wowed. We thought about it: among us we could have four teams of one, or one team of four. That's how we came together." And the union grows more potent and effective each time they open their mouths. Their latest mix tapes, including Shoot for the Stars, Hit the Ceiling and Nothing Stays Gold, have been flying out and signs point to some serious success. "There's no shortage of good feelings about ourselves," admits Davis. "People wonder how you can fit this many gigantic egos into one room!" Many in the hip-hop arena feel that, despite those expectations, PDP is knocking on a special door. "We really want to be put on the field with the best, to see how we measure up" says Davis.

So what is PDP looking for? "Right now, time and money are the only things holding us back."
